Who We Are ....
We are a Christian Church...
We confess the Lordship of Jesus Christ as our head and seek his
guidance in all we do.
We are a Protestant Church...
We recognize the Bible as the sufficient rule of faith and
practice, and hold that living in accordance with the life and
teaching of Jesus Christ is the true test of fellowship.
We are a Community Church...
We have served the Forest Hills community since 1912, and
continue to reach out and join in partnership with our
neighbors.
We are a Congregational Church...
Unique to our Congregational faith, we believe each member shall
have the undisturbed right to interpret the Word of God according to
the dictates of his or her own mind and conscience, under the
enlightenment of the Holy Spirit. Congregational polity means we are
a self-governing, democratic church. Authority resides in the body
of members, under the Lordship of Jesus Christ, together seeking the
inspiration of the Holy Spirit. A Congregational Church is bound
together by its Church Covenant, which states our common purpose and
commitment.
Affiliated with the National Association of Congregational
Christian Churches, we share with other similar congregations across
the United States in carrying on worldwide educational, medical and
preaching ministries.
HOW WE STARTED...
Neighborhood residents from six different denominations gathered
together on October 13, 1912 in a Station Square store for the first
meeting of what would become The Church-in-the-Gardens. Desiring to
create an ecumenically grounded Protestant community church for the
infant Forest Hills Gardens community, the founding members
incorporated within a year as a Congregational church.
OUR MISSION STATEMENT...
The Church-in-the-Gardens is a community Congregational Christian
Church whose cornerstone is the Lord Jesus Christ. As recipients of
God’s redeeming love in Christ and empowered by the Holy Spirit, we
are called to:
Glorify God
Bear Witness to God’s creative, redeeming
and sanctifying action in the world
Nurture each person in the Christian faith,
and
Affirm the worth and dignity of each
individual.
Therefore, we covenant to uphold each person in his or her walk
in Christ and to do deeds of faithful ministry in the world. We do
all in thankful celebration of the love of Jesus Christ.
Mission Statement adopted by the congregation,
1994.
WHAT IS A CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH?
There are over 4,000 Congregational churches throughout the
United States. Our start in this land began with the journey of the
early Mayflower Pilgrims, who fled persecution in England, coming to
America to establish freer lives under God's direction.
The Church-in-the-Gardens accepts the classic creeds of the
Christian Faith as guides and educational testimony to the core
beliefs of the universal Church, and has worshiped and interpreted
the scriptures in the spirit of the Reformed Protestant
traditions.
The Church-in-the Gardens is a member of the National Association
of Congregational Christian Churches (NACCC.)
AN INVITATION...
